The Cybertruck and R1T represent two very different philosophies of what an electric truck should be. The Cybertruck is a polarizing, angular, stainless-steel statement vehicle with massive towing capacity and Powershare capability. The R1T is a more conventional, adventure-oriented truck that prioritizes off-road refinement and build quality. Both are capable, but they appeal to different buyers.
Price
Tesla recently restructured Cybertruck pricing. In early 2026, a new Standard dual-motor AWD was introduced at $59,990 — a significant price cut from the previous $79,990 entry point. The premium Cybertruck AWD sits at $79,990, and the Cybertruck Cyberbeast at $114,990.
The 2026 Rivian R1T starts at approximately $69,900 for the Dual Standard, with the higher-spec trims ranging up to about $95,000. The Cybertruck's new Standard model now undercuts the R1T's base price by roughly $10,000.
Range
The Cybertruck AWD achieves 325 miles of EPA-estimated range from its 123 kWh battery. The Cyberbeast comes in at approximately 320 miles. The R1T offers multiple battery options: the Standard pack delivers roughly 260 miles, while the Large pack extends to approximately 320 miles (the Max pack, when available, targets over 400 miles).
In practice, both trucks see significant range reductions when towing. Expect 40-50% range loss when pulling a loaded trailer at highway speeds — a reality of electric truck physics that neither manufacturer has solved.
Towing and Payload
The Cybertruck leads on paper with an 11,000-pound towing capacity across both the AWD and Cyberbeast trims (the new Standard model drops to 7,500 lbs). Payload is rated at 2,535 pounds for the AWD. The R1T is rated for 11,000 pounds of towing on its highest configuration, with a payload capacity of approximately 1,760 pounds.
The Cybertruck's higher payload capacity and available bed outlets (120V and 240V) make it more capable as a work truck. Its Powershare feature can export up to 11.5 kW to power a home during grid outages — a feature no R1T configuration matches.
Off-Road Capability
The R1T was designed for off-road use from the ground up, and it shows. Its quad-motor setup (on higher trims) enables precise tank-turn capability and individual wheel torque control. The R1T's suspension is supple, its approach and departure angles are excellent, and its 14.9-inch ground clearance is competitive with dedicated off-road vehicles. The gear tunnel — a pass-through storage compartment between the cabin and bed — is a genuinely useful feature for outdoor gear.
The Cybertruck's air suspension provides up to 17.4 inches of ground clearance, more than the R1T. It offers a 35-degree approach angle and steer-by-wire with rear-wheel steering for a tight turning radius. The stainless-steel exoskeleton shrugs off trail damage that would dent or scratch conventional painted panels. However, the Cybertruck's greater width (86.6 inches vs the R1T's 79.3 inches) makes it less maneuverable on tight trails.
Charging
The Cybertruck uses Tesla's NACS port and accesses the full Supercharger network. Its 800-volt architecture supports up to 350 kW charging, with Tesla claiming approximately 136 miles of range added in 15 minutes.
Rivian adopted NACS for its 2025+ models, and R1T owners can now access Tesla Superchargers. The R1T supports up to 300 kW DC fast charging, though real-world speeds depend on the specific charger. Both trucks can now share the same fast-charging infrastructure.
Interior and Build Quality
The R1T's interior is widely praised for its material quality, fit, and finish. Rivian uses vegan leather, real wood accents, and thoughtful storage solutions throughout. The cabin feels premium and well-crafted in a way that justifies its price.
The Cybertruck's interior is more polarizing. Its marble-patterned dashboard, angular design, and minimalist controls are either futuristic or stark, depending on your taste. The Cyberbeast adds a premium interior with suede textile trim and stainless accents. Build quality has improved since the initial 2024 production run, but fit and finish remain a common criticism.
The Verdict
The Cybertruck is the better work truck and value proposition, especially with the new Standard trim at $59,990. It offers superior towing and payload capacity, Powershare home backup power, and Tesla's unmatched Supercharger network. Its stainless body is uniquely durable. Choose it if you want a capable truck that makes a statement.
The R1T is the better adventure vehicle and daily driver. Its superior build quality, more refined ride, quad-motor off-road capability, and thoughtful features like the gear tunnel make it a more polished product. Choose it if you prioritize craftsmanship and off-road refinement over raw capability.
