Buying a used Tesla is different from buying a gas car. You aren't checking for oil leaks; you're checking for computer lag, suspension "clunks," and battery degradation. Use this guide to separate the "Unicorns" from the "Lemons."

The Exterior: The "Tesla Gap" and Paint

Panel Gaps: Look at the gaps between doors, frunk, and trunk. They should be uniform. Significantly wider on one side could indicate a prior accident or a factory "Friday afternoon" build.

Glass Inspection: Check the roof and windshield for stress cracks. Early Model 3s and 2024 "Highland" models sometimes show distortion at the glass edges.

The "Whistle" Test: On your test drive, listen for high-pitched wind noise at highway speeds (65+ mph). This usually indicates a misaligned door seal or improperly seated windshield.

The Digital Health Check

Processor Speed: Go to Software → Additional Vehicle Information. If it's MCU2 (Intel), open the YouTube app. If it takes more than 15 seconds to load, the chip is showing its age.

The "Yellow Border": On older Model S/X (pre-2021), look for a yellow tint around the screen edges. This is a known glue failure that eventually requires replacement.

Battery Health: The "Gas Tank" Test

This is the #1 factor in a used Tesla's value.

The 100% Range Check: Ask the seller to charge to 100%. Compare "Miles at 100%" to the original EPA rating. 5–10% degradation over 50,000 miles is normal. 20%+ is a red flag.

Service Mode Test: On 2022+ models, enter Service Mode and run the Battery Health Test. It takes 24 hours but provides a definitive percentage.

The "Road Test": Suspension & Brakes

The Upper Control Arm "Clunk": Drive over a speed bump or turn the wheel sharply at low speeds. A "crunching" sound indicates a failed front upper control arm — a common issue.

Brake "Seizing": Inspect the rotors for heavy rust. If they look pitted, the calipers might be seized from infrequent use.
